The HP 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator (PE) for OpenVMS Alpha product
is being retired. The current generation synchronous communication
cards available on the Alpha hardware platform
(PBXDD-A*) do not provide the underlying firmware necessary to support
bisynchronous communications protocols.
Recommended Alternative
The recommended alternative solution is SYNCcable+ and 3780Plus
software from Cleo Communications. This is an external "black box"
solution that allows synchronous communications through standard
asynchronous serial ports. The 3780Plus software is available on
OpenVMS VAX and Alpha. More information on Cleo Communications is

and contrasts the functionality of the HP 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator
products with the Cleo 3780Plus product.
Customer Impact
Existing HP 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator for OpenVMS Alpha customers
will be supported through March 31, 2003. OpenVMS V7.2 is the final
operating system release supported. No further updates will be available.
Binaries will remain available on the Software Product Library for
the use of existing customers through Q1 2003.
Note: HP 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator for OpenVMS VAX is
not affected by this retirement. Support of HP's VAX 2780/3780 product
will continue for the foreseeable future.
