BASIC translator promotional product download/installation instructions

The BASIC Translator promotional product download contains a promotional copy of the BASIC Translator software.

» promotional license and registration form
» BASIC translator home page
» ACE home page

To download and install the promotional copy of the BASIC Translator on your OpenVMS system:

  1. Create an empty temporary directory on your OpenVMS system for the installation kit. This will ease the clean up process after installation.
  2. Fill out the Download Registration Form and click the I Accept These Conditions button.
  3. Click on the desired files (product and sample program) to begin the download process. Copy the files to the temporary installation directory on your OpenVMS system either directly on download, if your browser is running on OpenVMS, or through a separate copy to your OpenVMS system. If you are using FTP to transfer the files to an OpenVMS system, be sure to specify binary mode. For example,

    FTP> binary
    FTP> get DB2VB012_ALPHA.EXE

  4. After the files are copied to the OpenVMS system, issue the following command from the temporary installation directory on the OpenVMS system:

    $ RUN compressed-file
where compressed-file is the name of a BASIC Translator self-extracting file (e.g. DB2VB012_ALPHA.EXE). Repeat this command for each of the files copied.

  5. When the desired files are expanded to savesets, you may begin the installation of the BASIC Translator by entering the following command at the OpenVMS prompt from a privileged account:
  6. $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL DB2VB012 OPTIONS N

When this has completed, the BASIC Translator has been installed.

Once the installation procedure is complete, you may delete all the files and subdirectories associated with the installation kit, being sure not to delete the sample program if it was downloaded.

To download and install the promotional copy of the RTL on your PC:

The BASIC Translator Runtime Library is shipped as a separate kit from the Translator. This is because it needs to be copied to, and installed on, each NT/95 machine that intends to run an application generated with the BASIC Translator. The RTL contains all of the underlying code needed to perform DEC BASIC style I/O, as well as the Terminal emulator. This RTL kit is contained in a self-extracting executable file.

  1. Create an empty temporary directory for the installation kit. For example, C:\TRANSLATOR_TEMP.
  2. Click on the BASIC Translator RTL link to download it to your local Windows NT/95 machine. A dialog box will then prompt you for a directory name so the file may be downloaded. Enter the name of the temporary directory you created in Step 1 and then begin the download.
  3. Double-click the db2vbrtl.exe file after you download it.
  4. Result:The WinZip Self-Extractor starts and displays a dialog box, prompting you for a directory name. The default directory is C:\TEMP, but you should use whatever temporary directory you created in Step 1 (for example, C:\TRANSLATOR_TEMP).

As described in the dialog box, press the UNZIP button to perform the extraction. The files are unpacked into the specified subdirectory.

At the completion of the WinZip extraction, you may press the CLOSE button to complete the process.

  5. Run the installation procedure by double-clicking the SETUP.EXE file. Once the installation procedure is complete, you may delete all the files and subdirectories associated with the installation kit.

Downloading the documentation

Click on the BASIC Translator documentation link to download it to your local Windows NT/95 machine. The resulting DB2VBDOC.EXE file contains the following pieces of documentation in .PDF format.
