HP DCE for OpenVMS—what's new?

HP DCE Version 3.2 is a new release for HP OpenVMS for AlphaServer systems and HP OpenVMS for Integrity servers. HP DCE v3.2 is the first ported version of HP DCE for OpenVMS for Integrity servers. HP DCE for OpenVMS v3.2 is an implementation of OSF DCE R1.2.2, adapted and enhanced for OpenVMS. HP DCE v3.2 replaces its previous version (v3.1) on OpenVMS for AlphaServer systems. HP DCE v3.2 is supported on OpenVMS for AlphaServer systems v7.3-2 or higher and on OpenVMS for Integrity servers v8.2.

New features in HP DCE Version 3.2

HP DCE v3.2 is an enhanced version of HP DCE v3.1. It includes not only the features of the previous HP DCE releases (v3.0 and v3.1), but it also contains the following additional features:

  • Support for HP OpenVMS for Integrity servers—this is the first release of HP DCE on OpenVMS that provides support for OpenVMS for Integrity servers. Applications running on OpenVMS for Integrity servers can now participate in distributed computing. With the new support for the HP Integrity server platform, HP DCE v3.2 extends the boundaries of a distributed computing environment.
  • Support for IEEE floating point types—the default float support was G_Float for HP DCE applications running on OpenVMS for AlphaServer systems and OpenVMS for VAX systems. With this release, HP DCE has been enhanced to provide dual float support (IEEE_FLOAT and G_FLOAT) on the OpenVMS for AlphaServer system and OpenVMS for Integrity server platforms. Application developers now have the option of compiling their applications with a FLOAT type different from the native float.
  • A mechanism for tuning the buffer size of RPC sockets—sockets created by the RPC Runtime have a default value of 4K bytes. New logical support is introduced in HP DCE v3.2 where the default value can be tuned to the system-specified socket buffer size values.
  • Support for FAILSafe IP environments—HP DCE RPC is now FAILsafe IP compliant. The limitation with previous HP DCE versions has been resolved in this release.
  • Issue resolution—in addition to its new features, HP DCE v3.2 also contains bug fixes for issues identified in previous HP DCE versions.

New features in HP DCE Version 3.1

HP DCE v3.1 for OpenVMS for AlphaServer systems and OpenVMS for VAX systems is a new functionality and bug-fix release that supersedes HP DCE v3.0. Following are the new features in HP DCE v3.1.

  • Support for time synchronization with DECnet time servers—DCE DTSS allows time synchronization operations with DECnet time servers. The existing functionality in HP DCE v3.0 has been enhanced to support this feature.
  • CDS migration—the DCE integrated command-line program (DCECP) has been updated to perform migration of CDS databases from 3.0 to 4.0. Migration enables the use of R1.2.2 features such as hierarchical cells, alias cells, and delegation.
  • Support for the 'TRY_PE_SITE' logical—in addition to the existing support for the "BIND_PE_SITE" logical, a new logical, "TRY_PE_SITE", is available in HP DCE v3.1. This helps with security server load balancing. The existing behavior of locating the security server through the CDS namespace can be changed by enabling the "TRY_PE_SITE" logical. If the CDS server is unavailable, the security server can be located through the PE_SITE file.
  • A mechanism for improving the performance of CDS Clerk—the "TRY_PE_SITE" mechanism for locating the security servers can be confined to the CDS Clerk process by enabling a logical called "CDSCLERK_TRY_PE_SITE". This results in better performance of CDS operations.
  • Issue resolution—HP DCE v3.1 contains several bug fixes for issues identified in the previous HP DCE release.
