Memory Utilization on Intel and Alpha Systems

To improve performance on Intel and Alpha systems running the Access Server Gateway, follow the virtual memory utilization recommendations in this section. Using these as minimum values may help you avoid sluggish performance of your network.

You need at least 20 MB of RAM and 30 MB of hard disk space to install and run the Windows NT Server, the SNA Server, and the Access Server.

Table 5-2 shows virtual memory utilization of the Access Server Gateway components and sample configurations on Alpha systems. All values are approximate.

Table 5-2: Virtual Memory Utilization on Alpha Systems
Software Components Virtual Memory Utilization
Windows NT Server (Version 4.0 or higher) and Microsoft SNA Server with 1 PU (255 LUs) 55 MB (at startup)
DIGITAL SNA Access Server 5 MB (at startup)
For each additional PU with 255 LUs 3 MB
To support 255 sessions from OpenVMS clients to the IBM host 12 MB
For 4 PUs and 1024 sessions
(55 + 5 + 3*4 + 12*4)
120 MB
For 8 PUs and 2000 sessions (full load)
(55 + 5 + 3*8 + 12*8)
180 MB

Table 5-3 shows virtual memory utilization of the Access Server Gateway components and sample configurations on Intel systems. All values are approximate.

Table 5-3: Virtual Memory Utilization on Intel Systems
Software Components Virtual Memory Utilization
Windows NT Server (Version 4.0 or higher) and Microsoft SNA Server with 1 PU (255 LUs) 41 MB (at startup)
DIGITAL SNA Access Server 3 MB (at startup)
For each additional PU with 255 LUs 3 MB
To support 255 sessions from OpenVMS clients to the IBM 6 MB
For 4 PUs and 1024 sessions
(41 + 3 + 3*4 + 6*4)
80 MB
For 8 PUs and 2000 sessions (full load)
(41 + 3 + 3*8 + 6*8)
116 MB
