Netscape Navigator Gold V3.03 for OpenVMS Alpha (with Java) now available!

DIGITAL is pleased to announce the availability on our site of Netscape Navigator Gold V3.03 for OpenVMS Alpha (with Java). This version of the Navigator runs on OpenVMS Alpha systems only (Version 6.2 or higher). Note that the Netscape Navigator Gold V3.03 is available for OpenVMS VAX, albeit without Java support.

This is the customer quality version and not a beta version.

Do not repost these files on any other sites!

Navigator Gold V3.03 requires new Java class libraries. You must download the new Java class library file to run Java in V3.03.

This version of the Netscape Navigator is supported by DIGITAL, not by Netscape. After you install this version of the Navigator, you can reach the following information:

  • Installation and configuration questions:
    From the Navigator menu bar, select the Help | Release Notes menu option. Click the Netscape Navigator V3.0x for OpenVMS section.

    You should also check the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite FAQs, which we update regularly. From the Navigator menu bar, select the Help | Frequently Asked Questions menu option; click the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite FAQs section.

  • General Navigator for OpenVMS questions:
    From the Navigator menu bar, select the Help | Release Notes menu option. Look in the Release Notes and Other Netscape Navigator information sections.

Before you begin....

The following sections provide detailed instructions on how to download and install the files you need on your OpenVMS system. Please read through the entire process (including the list of required updates) before you download the Navigator images.

Depending on your configuration, you might need to install updates to your DECwindows software, or change symbol names.

Select the item from the following list that describes your current configuration:

  1. I am installing the Navigator on my system for the first time.

  2. I have not installed a version of the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite on my system, but I have downloaded a previous version of the Netscape Navigator from this website.

  3. I have installed a version of the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite on my system, and I have installed a version of the Netscape Navigator.

  4. I have installed a version of the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite on my system, but I have not installed a version of the Netscape Navigator.

Installing the Navigator on your OpenVMS system for the first time

If you have never installed the Navigator on your OpenVMS system before and you are running both of the following software versions:

  • OpenVMS Version 6.2 or higher and

  • DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-4 for OpenVMS

You can click here to continue the Navigator installation.

If you are running DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS

If you have never installed the Navigator on your OpenVMS Alpha system before, and you are running DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS, install the following update:

  • ALPMOTF07_U3012

For more information about updates, see:

On an Alpha system, use the VMSINSTAL procedure to apply the DECwindows Motif update. For example:

 $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL update_name device/directory

Where:

Variable Your value
update_name ALPMOTF07_U3012 for Alpha systems
device/directory Specify the disk or device and the full directory path to the update file.

If you are running OpenVMS Version 6.1

If you have never installed the Navigator on your OpenVMS system before, and you are running OpenVMS Version 6.1, install the ALPACRT09_061 update. You can get this patch from the h18000.www1.hp.com/support website. Use the following procedure:

Notes for existing version of the Navigator

The following notes apply to you if:

  • You have installed the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite and are running a version of the Netscape Navigator.
  • You have not installed the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite but you are running a version of the Netscape Navigator that you copied from this website.

Please review these notes:

  • When you install a beta version of the Navigator, the beta version is not registered as part of your existing OpenVMS Internet Product Suite. That is, the beta version does not replace the installed Navigator.

  • You cannot remove a beta version using the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite REMOVE command. You must delete the beta image by hand.

  • If you define a symbol for a beta version, do not use the symbol NETSCAPE. This symbol is already used by the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite to invoke the installed and registered version.

After reviewing these notes, click here to continue the Navigator installation.

Notes for installed OpenVMS Internet Product Suite but no installed Navigator

The following notes apply to you if have installed the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite but are not running a version of the Netscape Navigator.

Please review these notes:

  • When you install a beta version of the Navigator, the beta version is not registered as part of your existing OpenVMS Internet Product Suite.

  • You cannot remove a beta version using the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite REMOVE command. You must delete the beta image by hand.

After reviewing these notes, click here to continue the Navigator installation.

Step 1: Downloading the files

The Navigator Gold with Java V3.03 software is available for the Alpha platform as a compressed self-extracting file. There is also a separate file (not compressed) containing the Java class libraries.

You must download the new Java class library file to run Java in V3.03!

Step 2: Expanding the self-extracting file

Enter the following:

$ RUN downloaded-filename

Where:
Variable Your value
downloaded-filename NETSCAPE-EXPORT-ALPHA-V303C4R-JAVA-GOLD.EXE-DCX_AXPEXE

The system displays information about the file compression version, and help information about the command syntax.

At the Decompress into (file specification): prompt, specify a new name and location for the uncompressed file in the form device:[directory]file-specification. The system expands the file and places it in the directory you specify with the new name.

For example:

Decompress into
(file specification): DISK$1:[SMITH]NETSCAPE-JAVA.EXE

Step 3: Copying the Java class library file

For Java to function within the Navigator, the Java class libraries are required. This is the file JAVA_301. You can make this file available to the Navigator in one of two ways:

  1. Copy JAVA_301. to the [.NETSCAPE] subdirectory of SYS$LOGIN. (By default, the Navigator looks in that directory for this file.)
  2. Copy JAVA_301. to a directory other than [.NETSCAPE] and define the logical name NETSCAPE_CLASSPATH to point to that directory. For example:
    $ DEFINE NETSCAPE_CLASSPATH DEVICE:[DIRECTORY]JAVA_301

    Do not rename the Java class library file; it must be named JAVA_301. (no file type).

Step 4: Running the new version

Start the Navigator using the RUN command. For example:

$ RUN DISK$1:[SMITH]NETSCAPE-JAVA.EXE
