Digital RAMP statement |
Digital's OpenVMS VAX version 6.0 and SEVMS VAX version 6.0 were awarded the
National Computer Security Center's (NCSC) C2 and B1 ratings, respectively, in
1993. This was the culmination of a Trusted Computer Evaluation, a
collaborative effort between Digital and the National Computer Security Center
whereby the NCSC validated Digital's design of it's OpenVMS and SEVMS operating
systems against DoD 5200.28-STD "Department of Defense Trusted Computer System
Evaluation Criteria".
These C2 and B1 ratings allow these operating systems(s) to be used in various
government agencies, national defense organizations, military branches, prime
contractors and commercial environments where enhanced operating system
security is mission-critical.
RAMP is a process whereby OpenVMS and SEVMS can extend the C2 and B1 ratings
that resulted from the version 6.0 NCSC evaluation to new versions of the
operating system. Digital is using the NCSC's RAMP process to extend the C2
and B1 ratings to OpenVMS VAX and SEVMS VAX version 6.1 and then to OpenVMS
AXP and SEVMS AXP version 6.1.
Digital has completed a RAMP Technical Review Board (TRB) in September 1994 and
expects to obtain the C2 and B1 ratings for OpenVMS VAX and SEVMS VAX version
6.1 within the next few months. During this TRB, Digital proposed that the
RAMP process be used to achieve C2 and B1 ratings on OpenVMS AXP and SEVMS AXP
version 6.1. The proposal was well received by the NCSC as Digital strategy is
based on the functional equivalence of OpenVMS and SEVMS version 6.1 between
the VAX and AXP platforms.
This total RAMP process from version 6.0 to version 6.1 on both VAX and AXP
platforms is expected to be completed during Q4 of FY95 (April-June). Digital
plans to maintain the C2 and B1 ratings on future version of OpenVMS and SEVMS
operating systems.
