general information about SEVMS

For use with all external Digital World-Wide Web Servers

SEVMS is a NCSC Evaluated Class B1 Operating System

The SEVMS operating system provides mandatory access controls (in addition to the standard OpenVMS discretionary access controls) and enhanced security auditing for secure standalone or VMScluster systems running OpenVMS. SEVMS provides the security administrator with software to enforce a system-wide security policy that helps protect users, data, software, and hardware from security compromise. SEVMS satisfies the need of government agencies, national defense organizations, prime contractors, and other commercial environments to label and protect classified information processed on OpenVMS systems.

SEVMS enforces a security policy through a series of validation and access checking mechanisms. In the mandatory access control system provided by SEVMS, the non-privileged owner of information does not have the authority to grant access to other users, unless such access adheres to the overall, system-wide policy. The responsibility of classifying data, software and hardware, as well as authorizing users, lies solely with the security administrator.

SEVMS is designed to meet the criteria for a "Class B1" secure operating system as defined in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria, DoD 5200.28-STD.

Formal evaluation for SEVMS VAX version 6.0 was successfully completed on August 31, 1993. SEVMS VAX version 6.0 appears on the National Computer Security Center (NCSC) Evaluated Product List (EPL) as NCSC-EPL-93/003.

Digital is participating in the NCSC Rating Maintenance Program (RAMP).
