Storage Library System (SLS) for HP OpenVMS

Storage Library System (SLS) for HP OpenVMS is an automated backup solution for HP OpenVMS. It provides backup and tape library services for HP OpenVMS and HP OpenVMS clients. Automated backup capabilities include scheduling, robotic device management, tape pool management, and file catalogs.

Strategy and support

HP provides two automated backup solutions for HP OpenVMS: SLS and the HP Archive Backup System (ABS). ABS provides clients for Windows NT and UNIX platforms, as well as HP OpenVMS and is the next-generation automated backup solution for HP OpenVMS.

SLS will continue to support the VAX and AlphaServer system platforms, but will not be ported to the Integrity server platform. Customers who wish to add Integrity servers to their existing AlphaServer system-based clusters can continue to use SLS from the Alpha nodes, and will be able to manipulate the data stored in the shared storage area network (SAN) environment between the two architectures. Overall, SLS will continue to support new versions of HP OpenVMS on these architectures and to provide bug fixes where applicable. SLS will not support new tape libraries in the future and will not introduce new features.

The latest roadmaps for SLS can be found on the OpenVMS rolling roadmaps presentation.

For a current list of SLS supported tape libraries, see the support matrix.

Migration to ABS

As outlined in the enterprise backup strategy page of this Web site, an SLS customer has many options to consider when evolving from an SLS environment, but many will migrate to ABS. Licenses and service for ABS are provided by existing SLS licenses and service, so these costs should already be covered in a user's environment. The following resources will assist with the other aspects of migration from SLS to ABS:
