Ask the Wizard Questions

What is the maximum GByte size (number of LBN's) OpenVMS V5.5-2, V5.5-H4 and V6.1 can address?

The Question is:

What is the maximum GByte size (number of LBN's) OpenVMS V5.5-2, V5.5-H4 and V6.1 can address. I need the exact size. thanks in advance for your answer

The Answer is:

The largest logical volume size supported by OpenVMS VAX is as follows: V5.5-2, V5.5-2H4, and all prior versions: 8GB (2**24-1 blocks) V6.0 and later versions: 2TB (2**31-1 blocks)

All versions of OpenVMS Alpha support logical volumes up to 2TB.

By logical volume, we mean any disk or aggregation of disks that appears in the system as a single logical unit. For example, a stripe or RAID set constitutes a single logical unit. On the other hand, a file system volume set consists of multiple logical units, each of which is subject to the above limits. Because a file can occupy multiple volumes of a volume set, using a volume set makes it possible to have files greater than 8GB in size on a V5.5-2 system.
