Previously-reported problem specific to the Fujitsu M2934SAU drive

The Question is:

Dear Wizards,

I'm facing a Disk problem on a DEC 3000/400 AXP machine. I have a Fujitsu M2934SAU 4Gb external Hard drive that works fine on VMS 6.1. When I try to use it on the same machine, booted in VMS 6.2 I'm unable to mount the drive : I get a message requesting operator assistance, and there are continuous accesses to the disk until I do power it off.

What did you change between VMS 6.1 and VMS 6.2 that makes my disk unrecognizable to VMS 6.2 ?

The Answer is:

OpenVMS V6.2 makes use of SCSI-2 messages to dynamically configure the SCSI device. You'll want to check with the drive vendor to see if the drive vendor supports the full SCSI-2 command set, and with your hardware support organization to see what support they can offer.

If the drive is visible as a "DK" device under OpenVMS, the V6.2 tool SYS$ETC:SCSI_INFO can be run against the drive -- this tool can be used to see what (if any) SCSI problems might be present.

The most common source of these problems is an incorrect response to the (10 byte) SCSI mode sense command.

In this particular situation, OpenVMS engineering is looking at a previously-reported problem specific to the Fujitsu M2934SAU drive.
