Ask the Wizard Questions

Storage: TurboLaser boot off HS121?

The Question is:

We've got a 6 processor 8400 and HS121 FDDI StorageWorks
system. And we're trying to determine if we can put
the VMS system disk for the 8400 on the HS121.

So far we've physically taken a bootable VMS V6.2 disk
that we used on the 8400 as a local disk (DKA500) and
moved it to the HS121 and made it a transportable disk
to the HS121. Then I went into NCP and defined the 8400
to one of the HS121 CPUs' NCP so that the HS121 CPU can
serve the MOP boot request from the 8400. And by watching
the HS121 console for the system that has the NCP info,
it sure looks like the 8400 is issing a boot request and
the HS121 cpu is answering up. Alas, the 8400 doesn't
do anything but appears to bugcheck (it's kind of hard
to tell as the stack rolls off the VT510 screen rather
quickly).

We only have FDDI connected between the 8400 and the two
CPUs that make up the HS121. All three CPUs are at V6.2.

Anyway, is FDDI booting like this supported???

Thanks.

The Answer is:

    No.

There was a problem with the older versions of the AlphaServer
8400 console code if the adaptor is a DEFPA. It might be fixed in
    the current version V3.4.

MOP works with the XMI-based DEMFA today.

Attach a printer to the console terminal to capture the output.

on OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 only the following FDDI boot drivers exist:

    SYS$FCBTDRIVER	- Turbochannel/FDDI (DEFTA)
    SYS$FRBTDRIVER	- EISA/FDDI (DEFEA)
    SYS$FXBTDRIVER	- XMI/FDDI (DEMFA)

anything will not be able to directly over the FDDI as of V6.2
Please note, that I'm strictly talking about FDDI boot drivers, there
are many more FDDI adapters and corresponding drivers, which will work
just fine once the system is up.

BTW, OpenVMS Alpha V6.2-1H1 has additional FDDI boot drivers
(incl for example PCI/FDDI (DEFPA) adapter), so you might want to
    try this out.
