Network: FAL and TCP/IP products

The Question is:

We are looking at purchasing TCP/IP for our VAX, but are
concerned as to whether FAL will recognize ftp transfers,
providing for the subsequent event driven execution of a
program.

Can you please advise?

The Answer is:

FAL is file access listener.  It is the remote end of an RMS
operation that specified a node name.  To date RMS only uses DECnet
for remote operations. With DECnet/OSI, the transport can be IP.

All TCP/IP implementations, including Digital's DEC TCP/IP Services
for OpenVMS AXP V4.0, include an FTP utility.  It operates as a
utility and not a system service available to applications.  At best,
an application could spawn the FTP utility to perform an operation.
Naturally both ends of the operation must use the same function.  FTP
requires a TCP/IP capability at the remote end.  It does not use the
RMS FAL.

This might be refering to the submit feature of RMS which is supported
by FAL. FTP would know nothing of this.

Or, this might be refering to the transparent task-to-task feature of
DECnet. Being transparent it is accessible via RMS using a special
filename syntax.  FTP would know nothing of this.

While OpenVMS does not provide a general directory entry creation
notification mechanism, though one can use a user-written "alarm
receiving" application and an alarm on the directory, or one can use
periodic (once a minute) polling of the directory.
