Ask the Wizard Questions

DECwindows DECsound format conversion

The Question is:

We have a VAX 8650 cluster that serves digital audio files to the
VT240 terminals. The audio is stored in obviously DEC proprietary
format. I need to convert the audio so I can run the files on DEC
5000s either in Open VMS or preferably DEC UNIX (OSF/1 Ver 3.2). Is
there a conversion utility available to convert these files to any
industry standard audio format. Please note: I have tried the SOX
utility program. While the DEC format is similiar to the UNIX ".au"
format, the documentation says the encoding uses "u Law 255" (read as
"mu" Law 255) encoding. I can find no reference to this variation on
the uLaw encoding formats.

Please Help !!!!

Thanks, I appreciate your assistance.

The Answer is:

What products were used to record the sound file(s)? (I am aware
of no Digital voice or sound products for the VAX 8650 series.)
The DECvoice products do support uLAW format, and can convert among
various (supported) formats -- DECvoice is a Q-bus controller.
