Ask the Wizard Questions

Performance data collection

The Question is:

Hello Wizard,

I really do not know whether my simple question belongs here
or not. However, I appreciate any kind of help that I can get.
I like to know how can I create a process (not using spawn)
that collects some information(i.e. number of interactive users per
hour for 24 hours for span of week) and puts the result in
my directory. Furthermore, I like this process to start performing
this task on every monday at 12:01 AM and stays on till next
saturday 11:59 PM and starts automatically again.
I hope I explained my problem clearly.

The Answer is:

A program can be written that uses the sys$getjpi[w] system service
(and WORLD privilege) to poll the system at a program-specified
interval, and the program can write the results into a program-specified
directory. One can run the collection program independent of any user
login via the RUN/DETACH or sys$creprc services. Start and stop times
are also up to the programmer.

One can also potentially create a program or can use the ACCOUNTING
utility to read this information from the OpenVMS system accounting
   logs.

There are examples of the sys$getjpi[w] service in the SYS$EXAMPLES:
   directory.
