Ask the Wizard Questions

Maximum file size

The Question is:

What is the maximum size of a single file in openVMS 5.5-2
and 6.2 for both Alpha and VAX?
I know in vms 5.5-2 the volume size was approx 8.5 gig.
and increased to a terabyte in vms6. Can a file be that
large? Also, how can I find out how large a file can be
in OSF/1?

The Answer is:

:What is the maximum size of a single file in openVMS 5.5-2
:and 6.2 for both Alpha and VAX?

The internal absolute limit on file size under ODS2 is thirty-two bits
worth of half-kilobyte blocks (2**32 * 512). As volumes are limited
to 1 TB, that's the effective limit on file size.

:I know in vms 5.5-2 the volume size was approx 8.5 gig.
:and increased to a terabyte in vms6. Can a file be that
:large?

Yes. There are performance concerns around index depth and such
   on indexed files.

: Also, how can I find out how large a file can be in OSF/1?
