Ask the Wizard Questions

Poor LAT response on Alpha

The Question is:

We are running OpenVMS 6.2 on an 8200 Alpha. All communications over
the LAT are experiencing intermittent bursting delays of 1 to 2
seconds. The delays seem to be load dependent to some degree but are
still present even when the machine is running with a very light load.

Prior to this we were running the same LAT service on a
3600 under VMS and had no problem of this type. It only
began when we migrated to the Alpha.

This bursting makes all online work rther trying, as you
can well imagine! Is there anything you can suggest to
track down where the problem lies?

The Answer is:

The network is experiancing problems. It could be saturation, babling
device, bad cable, or a lot of other things. There is nothing on Alpha
that makes the LAT protocol worse than on VAX. You need to
    troubleshoot like any network problems.
