Ask the Wizard Questions

Terminal is screwed up

The Question is:

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

SORRY, BUT I CAN'T EVEN FILL OUT YOUR FORM CORRECTLY!

I'M AT SCHOOL IN A WINDOWS 3.1 ENVIRONMENT. I CHOOSE
HOST PRESENTER TO READ MY EMAIL WITH PINE. I HAD TO
PUT AN ATTACHMENT ON MY HOME DIRECTORY (NO LONGER IN PINE)
IN ORDER TO READ IT. TO SEE IT FROM THAT DIR I HAD TO
TYPE AT THE $ PROMPT:
			TYPE MIKE.;1

WELL, THAT WENT FINE, SO I DECIDED TO READ, BY SAYING
"TYPE", A BUNCH OF THE OTHER FILES IN MY DIR. WHEN I
DID THIS TO A FILE NAMED: GOPHERRC.;1 I JUST GOT THE
$ PROMPT BACK AND NOW I GET SYMBOLS IN LOTS OF ODD PLACES.
I'M AFRAID TO LOG OFF AT THE $ PROMPT FOR FEAR OF RUINING
MY ENTIRE MAIL DIRECTORY. PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO PUT IT
BACK THE WAY IT WAS. PS. I KNOW ONLY ABOUT 5 WORDS IN
VMS...I THINK IT'S VMS.

HELP!

PS: I CAN'T READ MY EMAIL BECAUSE OF ALL THE JIBBERISH,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

The Answer is:

When you typed the GOPHERRC. file, it contained non-printable characters which
switched your terminal emulation to the line-drawing character set. The
easiest way to switch it back is to type SHOW CLUSTER - this will reset the
terminal characteristics.
