Ask the Wizard Questions

NT: Terminal access

The Question is:

We have an Alpha 2000/300 running on OpenVMS and Pathworks.
We intend to go to Windows NT and attach 25 PCs to the Alpha
for file security purposes. We also want the PCs to talk to our
VAX 4000 thru terminal emulation. DO I HAVE TO KEEP OPEN VMS on the
Alpha Server ??????
I get mixed responses from Digital and the Software providers on the VAX
any comments would be appreciated.

The Answer is:

OpenVMS running on the DEC 2000 model 300 can support this.

If you wish to remove OpenVMS from the configuration, you will need
to contact the new operating system vendor -- Microsoft, in the case
of NT -- for information on what is and is not supported in this
   configuration.

If you wish to know if you can access OpenVMS from a Microsoft
operating system such as NT or Windows, you will need to contact the
operating system vendor -- Microsoft -- for information on this
   configuration.

(When running a non-Digital operating system such as NT, the Digital
DEC 2000 model 300 becomes analogous to any of the standard Intel
platform vendors -- the platform is of interest only when considering
hardware-specific issues. Software support is handled elsewhere.)

OpenVMS supports inbound telnet, LAT, DECnet, and serial connections,
   among various other protocols.
