Ask the Wizard Questions

Storage: DSSI to SCSI

The Question is:

Dear Wizard,

1. How can I backup the System Disk without the need for Shutdown and
Stand-Alone Backup?

2. Is there a way to connect DSSI disks (RFxx) to SCSI VAX's (3100-90
for example)?

3. What is the product for LOOP detaction? Is it for free?

   Thanks,

The Answer is:

:1. How can I backup the System Disk without the need for Shutdown
:and Stand-Alone Backup?

The only reliably way to back up an OpenVMS disk is possible when
there are no files accessed on the disk, and this is not the case
when OpenVMS is booted and running. The only reliable way to get
a BACKUP of an OpenVMS system disk is to shut down all OpenVMS
systems booted from a particular system disk, and use another
OpenVMS system disk or standalone BACKUP to perform the BACKUP.

If you do not need to restore the system disk into a consistent and
bootable state, then online BACKUP can be used.

:2. Is there a way to connect DSSI disks (RFxx) to SCSI VAX's
: (3100-90 for example)?

Not directly, no -- though the DSSI disks can be served from other
VMScluster member systems, systems that can directly connect to the
   DSSI bus.

:3. What is the product for LOOP detaction? Is it for free?

I have no idea what "loop detection" is in this context.
